Biography

A native of Montréal, Alexandra Nguyen cultivates a multifaceted career as pianist, pedagogue, and advocate for the collaborative arts. She has performed widely across the United States and Canada, with recent international appearances in Italy, Spain, and Malaysia, at distinguished venues including Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall (New York, NY), The Barns at Wolf Trap (Vienna, VA), Teatro Nacional (Panama City, Panama), Merkin Hall at the Kaufman Center (New York, NY), Van Cliburn Hall (Fort Worth, TX) and the High Commission of Canada (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). A sought-after collaborator, Nguyen has appeared with artists such as baritone John Fulton, bassoonist Peter Kolkay, and pianist Jennifer Hayghe, with whom she maintains long-standing partnerships.

Dr. Nguyen is Professor of Collaborative Piano at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music, where she co-directs the graduate program in collaborative piano. An active clinician, she presents master classes and workshops nationwide and is the creator of three-tiered listening (3TL©), a pedagogical framework for ensemble performance. She is on the faculty of the Collaborative Piano Institute and has previously worked with Quartet Program West, Opera Orvieto, and Orvieto Musica. She is also a frequent adjudicator, having served on the juries of the Eastman International Young Artists Piano Competition and the Gina Bachauer Junior and Young Artists Competition, among others.

 

 

​Dr. Nguyen currently serves as Chair of the Collaborative Performance Committee of the Frances Clark Center, where her contributions were acknowledged by the organization with an Outstanding Service Recognition Award. She is also a founding member of Dream Big, a Canadian collaborative piano collective for which she continues to provide artistic leadership. She has been an invited speaker at the National Association of Schools of Music Annual Meeting, the College Music Society Annual Conference, the Music Teachers National Association National Convention, and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy.

Dr. Nguyen completed graduate degrees in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music at the Eastman School of Music under the guidance of Jean Barr, where she was awarded the institution’s first Performer’s Certificate in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music. Her principal teachers include Douglas Humpherys, Madeleine Bélanger, and Suzanne Goyette. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University and a Premier Prix from the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal.
